Carol Ann Tyrrell who keeps Whitchurch Library Park spotless has received Cardiff Civic Society’s inaugural ‘Hidden Hero’ award.

Carol, who was nominated by fellow Whitchurch resident, Professor John Aggleton, who works at Cardiff University, has been collecting litter at her local park for nine  years.

“During my husband’s last years he was confined to a wheelchair, and going to the park was something we could do together.  I still go out every day and collect litter and recycling in separate containers,” says Carol Ann.  “The only thing I won’t pick up is the cigarette butts!”

Professor Aggleton adds, “When my children were small, the park was full of rubbish, and I used to be concerned about them when they were out playing. Now, thanks to Carol Ann’s daily effort,  the place is immaculate, and is a joy to spend time there.”

Nerys Lloyd-Pierce, chair of Cardiff Civic Society adds, “There are so many people selflessly making Cardiff a better place for us all to live in, we thought it was time they enjoyed some recognition, so we launched our Hidden Hero awards.  We are delighted that Carol Ann is our first recipient, as she works so hard keeping Whitchurch Library Park spotless.”

Carol Ann received a bouquet of flowers and a box of chocolates.

If anyone would like to nominate a Hidden Hero in their neighbourhood, please email Nerys on chair@cardiffcivicsociety.org.
