Community spirit alive and well in Cardiff.
Balaclava Road in Penylan celebrated its latest Big Lunch with a street party in honour of the Queen, cake making, games, a swap-me table, talent show and a jazz band.
“Our annual street party is a great success and has really enhanced the community spirit, as well as giving children the chance to play in the street for one day a year,” says Elizabeth Williams, event organiser.
“Our annual street party started with the Jubilee and then the Royal Wedding, and now comes under the auspices of the Big Lunch, which was started by the Eden Project to help bring communities together.”
Elizabeth says that the annual street party has helped everyone get to know one another, and support each other throughout the year. Young and old are now part of a solid community, and everyone helps each other out on an on-going basis.
“Our elderly residents say that our annual parties have really improved the road, and bridged the age gap. It’s a great thing to have happened, especially as in most places people tend to be too busy to get to know their neighbours.”
