planting trees across our City…

Since it's launch in 2018 Cardiff Civic Society has stepped up its tree planting project Canopy Cardiff/Canopi Caerdydd, to plant greater numbers of trees in the city.

In recent years, the city has lost 34 hectares of trees to development, to add to the problem many trees have been lost to this summer’s prolonged drought, and to ash die-back.

Trees for Cities, a national charity based in London, plants 40,000 trees in 10-15 cities across the UK each year. The trees in Cardiff have been planted as part of Cardiff Civic Society’s Canopi Caedydd/Canopy Cardiff campaign

“Trees play an invaluable role in the health and well-being of our city.  As well as the aesthetic benefits of leafy, green areas, trees and the associated green spaces are known to reduce stress and anxiety; trees also improve air quality and provide resilience to climate change.  As intensification of farming methods reduces habitat in the countryside, urban areas are becoming increasingly important for many of our bird species.  Mature trees  are  vital for maintaining biodiversity, and succession planting is essential to ensure continuity.

“Economic benefits to the tune of millions of pounds per annum have also been attributed to the presence of trees, and it’s widely recognised that property values are significantly higher in leafy areas.”

Cardiff Civic Society is currently urging individuals and businesses to plant as many native species of trees as possible for human health and wildlife benefits.

Health benefits of trees:

*Research from Exeter University illustrates that people living close to urban green space are less likely to suffer from stress, anxiety and depression

* In 1984, healthcare design researcher, Roger Ulrich, concluded that hospital patients with a view of green space recovered more quickly than patients with a view of concrete.

*Research carried out in Toronto indicates that people living on tree lined streets enjoy health benefits that equate to their being seven years younger.

*One mature tree provides enough oxygen for four people, and combats the negative effects of pollution.

*When a mature tree is felled, 60 saplings have to be planted to achieve the same benefits.

We continue to raise money for our planting project that will help keep Cardiff green by planting new trees throughout the city.
